*Welcome Our Guest Blogger- Alexis Neil of Cotton and Grain Sewing Company!*
Woo Hoo! I’m so excited to share the first ever Misusu Patterns FREE’kin Sewing Challenge and blog tour with you all today! I’ll share more on how to enter to win a free pattern of your choice, a coupon, as well as contest details below but first I wanted to share my blog tour contribution, complete with a pattern modification I made from Elles’ amazing patterns. The best part…two of the patterns I’ve used are free! If you haven’t checked out Misusu yet, you are seriously missing out. Her patterns are modern, fun, and full of unique details that will take your baby and toddler’s wardrobe to the next level! You can find all of her patterns here.
The patterns I chose for my FREE’kin Sewing Challenge Contribution consist of two free patterns; the Rowan Tee and the Olli Lined Pants as well as a paid pattern, the Bruno Cardigan. The great thing about Misusu’s free patterns is that they are just as expertly drafted and put together as all of their great paid patterns. As with all patterns, be sure to check your child’s measurements against those of the pattern to get the perfect fit!
For this challenge, I was looking to create an outfit for J that could be worn together or as separate statement pieces that could transition from fall to winter, and I was not disappointed with all of the options. I started out by creating the Olli lined pants out of some cozy flannel I’ve had in my stash forever and stretch corduroy from Whimsy Baby Customs. Next, I moved onto the Rowan tee. I used a few different fabrics for this piece, some from my fabric stash, a panel and herringbone from Whimsy Baby Customs, and birch trees from Rockerbye Destash Fabrics. Both of these patterns came together quickly and the fit was spot on with the measurement chart. I definitely can’t wait to make more of both of these patterns for J’s wardrobe!
BRUNO CARDIGAN POCKET MODIFICATION
Next, I moved onto the Bruno Cardigan. The Bruno is great for scrap busting and if you aren’t quite confident enough to put the colors together, Misusu has you covered! Just pick out your five prints/fabrics you’d like to use and follow the directions on how to put them all together to create a masterpiece of your own!
I added a few modifications to the cardigan, including omitting the sleeves and adding a 2 in. wide band that was 85% of the length of the armscye to create a vest. The next modification was a pocket added to one of the front pieces. To add a pocket to your own Bruno Cardigan, you are going to cut out all of your pieces as usual. Next, cut out a second 1E piece for the left front. This is where you will be creating the pocket. After you have your second 1E piece cut out, you will trim off a half an inch from the top of the second piece. I will refer to the second, shortened 1E piece as 1E* from here on out to help reduce confusion.
Next, cut a band for your pocket that is 1/4 in. longer than the length of the top of your 1E* piece by 1.5 in wide.
Fold your band piece in half, and lay it raw edges against the top of the right side of 1E*. Pin and sew them together. Press the seam down.
Take your 1E* piece and topstitch your seam down.
Next, start to assemble your left side front starting with 1A and continue following the instructions through piece 1E. You will sew the 1E piece on, as usual, making sure to press your seam down.
Then take your 1E* piece and lay it on top of your 1E piece, making sure to line up all of the edges. Baste the edges with a 1/4 in. seam allowance to hold your pieces together and combine them into one.
Continue following the cardigan instructions on adding piece 1D to your now combined 1E/1E* piece. Congratulations! You now have added a pocket to the front of your Bruno Cardigan! Continue following the instructions as usual to complete your cardigan.
